Dictaphone/Digital Voice Recorders

These essential pieces of hardware needed for some of the software recommended for DSA assistive technology support. There are different makes and models out there, however all are great tools for recording lectures and seminars. These devices can record your own notes to be used with the Audio Notetaker and Dragon Naturally Speaking programs, which convert speech into text and vice versa via a function called transcribing. For specific Dictaphone-based software see the ‘Olympus Sonority’ review.

DnA Review

“Digital voice recorders allow students to never miss a word that their lecture is saying! This is fantastic if you’re anything like me and struggle to write notes and listen to what is being said fully. Dictaphones allow for index marks to be inserted so you can find your way back to relevant sections, so no need to listen to the whole 3 hour lecture! Also available are video Dictaphones which enable you to record short films. I have seen students who are completing University courses in animation and these Dictaphones act as a great resource so they can create their own Pixar type films!”
